I stood beside Sebastian in the living room of the retreat, waiting for our guests to arrive. Other weres, Sky among them, stood watching and waiting. The atmosphere was tense, even by recent standards. We all understood that, while the meeting of the packs had been difficult, it was nothing compared with what we were doing now.
It was time to talk with the rest of the underworld, and we had no idea how they would react.
I struggled to keep myself still as the door swung open and Demetrius stalked in, flanked by Chase and Gabriella. He was smartly dressed in a shirt and slacks so black they seemed to have been cut from the night, while his companions wore smart pale blue and tan instead of their usual casual goth style. These two were background players today, toning things down to let their master stand out, though toned down didnât extend to properly hiding the guns they carried in the back of their waistbands. All three looked around them with disdain.
Demetrius gave Sebastian the smallest of nods, barely an acknowledgment of whose territory he was in, then went to stand against the wall, in between his two guards. He surveyed the room, cold, calculating, and ruthless. I would have liked nothing more than to tear his head off and stuff it down the stump of his throat, but today we had to play nice. Today was all about politics.
The vampires could get away with wearing their hostility so openly in our home, as we had invited them here and so must need them for something. But I could see that Sky was tensing up in the face of creatures that had so often tried to harm her, and who now claimed an obligation on her to hand over Chris.
âDo you want to step out until everyone has arrived?â I asked her. It might have been more diplomatic from the start, removing a reminder of Michaelaâs death. On the other hand, reminding people of how far we could go had its advantages.
Sky shook her head. She would be here no matter what for Steven, who stood in a corner of the room, waiting to hear others debate his fate.
Next to arrive were Gideon, the ruler of the elves, and his sister Abigail. They walked in with arms interlinked, twin visions of pale, androgynous beauty, with violet eyes shining from narrow, delicate faces. They looked so fragile, it was easy to forget that they had launched a coup within the elven community, taking over from the Makellos elite without the bloodshed of a civil war.
Thinking of Gideon as the leader was in some ways misleading. While elven custom prevented Abigail from ruling, she was effectively their leader, and everyone knew that she was the mastermind behind the new elven status quo, down to the internal exile of Liam, former ruler now turned delegate, governing the Makellos in their private kingdom of Elysian.
The elves approached Sebastian, nodded to him in respectful greeting, then went to sit on a sofa at the side of the room.
